If you ever chance to visit historical places of Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, you can’t possibly miss out on the 400-year-old majestic and imposing Golconda Fort situated on the western outskirts in the city. The fort was built by the Kakatiya dynasty in the 13th century.

The historic Golconda Fort derives its name from a Telugu word ‘Golla Konda’ which means Shepherd’s hill. Initially, it was a mud fort but later on transformed into granite one during the Qutb Shahi dynasty.

Who doesn’t like to see historical places once! This place is awesome and huge. A lot of things to explore history. To cover the whole fort nicely it takes around whole day so plan accordingly.

At evening time they make light show inside the fort which is one of the best sounds and light shows in the country which blends in excellently with the ambience of the place.

At 6.30 pm an hour-long laser/light show is arranged which describes the long history of the fort, narrated in the voice Amitabh Bachchan is a wonderful experience.

Beginning with a ghazal rendered by Jagjit Singh Ek Gulshan Thha Jalwanuma, the show begins on a promising note about the Golconda fort that has seen Yadava, Kakatiya and Qutb Shahi dynasties.

After this one dramatic episode, the story of Golconda becomes one big family drama with a lot of Telugu songs and laughter in the palace courtyard that begins with the treachery of Jamsheed Quli the son of the first Qutb Shahi king Sultan Quli Qutb ul Mulk.

The story of Kohinoor, Kuchipudi dance, an episode of Ramadas’ imprisonment and subsequent release, ends with the story of the faithfulness of Abdur Razzak Lari and the treachery of Abdullah Khan Panni draws the curtains on the sound and light show.

Golconda Fort is an amazing piece of architecture. It offers a splendid view from the top. Sunset is also breathtaking.

A lovely fort from the Qutub Shahi dynasty of Golconda. Although a little out of town, well worth the trip!
